Commonly Asked Questions

At what age should I schedule my child’s first orthodontic check up?

Dr. Stewart and the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that children receive their first orthodontic examination by the age of 7. If orthodontics is not recommended, we will continue to monitor the growth and development of your child once a year.

What is the length of orthodontic treatment?

Treatment lengths vary depending on the severity of the malocclusion, type of treatment, patient compliance, and other factors. In general, treatment lengths are between 9 to 36 months. Dr. Stewart focuses on recommending orthodontic treatment at the ideal time in order to maximize efficiency and reduce treatment lengths.

How often will I have appointments?

Appointments are generally scheduled at 4-8 week intervals.

Is getting braces painful?

Great news: getting braces does not hurt at all! Our team will ensure that the entire process is easy and comfortable — you may even request to watch TV, listen to music, or cuddle up with a blanket while we’re bonding your braces!

How long does it take to have braces put on my teeth?

It takes about 30 minutes to bond a comprehensive set of braces, and the bonding appointment will last about an hour from start to finish.

Do braces hurt?

Braces themselves are not painful, but it is perfectly normal for the teeth to become sore as they begin to move. Don’t worry — we will go over all tips and tricks to help alleviate discomfort associated with your new braces before you head home!

Can i return to school after getting braces?

Yes, absolutely! There is no reason to miss an entire day of school for an orthodontic appointment. We will provide an appointment excuse that can be shared with your school to confirm the time of your visit.

Can i play sports while wearing braces?

Yes, of course! Dr. Stewart recommends the use of a mouth guard when playing contact sports in order to prevent damage to your braces and your teeth.

Do I still need regular dental checkups while wearing braces?

Yes, it is imperative that you continue to visit your general dentist every 3-6 months while wearing braces to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy.

What foods should I avoid while wearing braces?

Hard, sticky, and crunchy foods should be avoided while wearing braces in order to prevent breakage of your appliances. We will share all the food and drink “dos and don’ts” once your orthodontic treatment begins.

What foods should I avoid while wearing clear aligners?

Aligners need to be removed prior to eating or drinking anything other than still, unflavored water. Once you remove them, you may eat or drink anything you desire! Just remember to clean your teeth prior to inserting your aligners again.

How often should I clean my teeth while wearing braces?

Maintaining oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment is imperative to prevent white spot lesions, tooth decay, and gum disease. Patients should brush their teeth at least 3-4 times per day — once after each meal and once before bed. Food and plaque can hide in areas that your toothbrush can’t reach, so it is also important to floss between your teeth every night before bed. Electric toothbrushes and water flossers are great additions to your oral hygiene routine while wearing braces!

Do you require a referral from a family dentist prior to scheduling my initial consultation?

Dr. Stewart loves collaborating with general dentists and other dental specialists, but a referral is not necessary to schedule an initial smile consultation.
